How to Manually Open a Garage Door (and Close It Safely)

Knowing how to manually open a garage door saves you when the power goes out or the opener dies. Every automatic opener has a red emergency release cord for this. Pull it, and the door comes off the opener so you can lift it by hand. The trick is knowing when it is safe to pull.

Manual mode simply means the door moves on its springs and your arms, not the motor. A healthy door should feel fairly light. If it feels like lifting a car, stop. Something is wrong, and the steps below will help you spot it.

Before you pull the cord: a quick safety check

Also check the cables on both sides of the door. A loose or snapped cable can let one side drop. If you see one, leave the door alone. A door hanging crooked needs off track repair, not muscle.

How to manually open a garage door in 4 steps

1. Unplug the opener or switch off its breaker, so it cannot start while your hands are on the door.
2. Pull the red release cord straight down. You should feel a click as the trolley lets go of the door.

The exact move depends on your rail. On a square rail, you pull the cord toward the opener. On a T rail, you pull it straight down. A wall mounted opener beside the door clicks back when you pull its handle down firmly. If it does not catch the first time, run one more full open and close.

Unlock the slide lock before you press the button. An opener pushing against a locked door can strain the motor and bend the door.
