Roller & panel replacement: the short answer
Garage door roller replacement fixes most grinding, shaking doors. Nylon rollers with sealed bearings run quiet and resist rust. A full set costs $150 to $250 nationally. A dented panel can often be swapped if a match exists. On a wind rated door, the new panel must keep the door's Florida approval. A tune up keeps everything balanced.

Garage door roller replacement is one of the simplest ways to make a door quiet and smooth again. Rollers are small, but they guide the whole door. When they wear out, the door shakes, grinds or drags. Damaged panels and skipped upkeep cause the rest of the trouble we see.
When do garage door rollers need replacing?
A roller is a small wheel on a short metal stem. Each one sits in a hinge or bracket and rides inside the steel track. Angi says a standard home door has 10 to 12 of them.
Your ears usually notice first. A door that grinds, squeals or rattles often has worn rollers. Look closely, too. Angi notes that worn steel rollers have bearings that no longer look round, and worn nylon rollers crack.
Wobbling is another sign. A worn wheel lets the door shift in the track as it moves. Left alone, a bad roller can climb out of the rail. Then you need our garage door off track repair service, which costs more than new rollers.

Which rollers hold up best in Florida heat, humidity and salt?
For most homes here, nylon rollers with sealed ball bearings are a good fit. Angi notes that nylon rollers run much quieter than steel. Higher quality rollers also have bearings packed with grease, which helps them last.
Steel rollers are tougher, but bare steel rusts. A study of steel corrosion near the sea found that salt speeds up rust while metal stays wet. Our humid air keeps metal damp for long stretches. So rusty steel bearings near the coast can turn rough and loud.
Cheap nylon rollers with no bearings sit at the other end. They wear flat and crack sooner. Angi still rates steel as the more durable material overall. We match the roller to the door’s weight, how often it runs and how close you live to salt water.

How much does garage door roller replacement cost?
Garage door roller replacement costs $150 to $250 for most homes, with an average of $200, per Angi. That covers parts and labor for a full set. The rollers alone are cheap. Most of the price is the time to swap them safely.
| Job | National cost | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Roller replacement, parts and labor | $150 to $250, average $200 | Angi, 2026 |
| Nylon roller, each | $10 to $20 | Angi, 2026 |
| Steel roller, each | $15 to $30 | Angi, 2026 |
| Panel replacement, parts and labor | $350 to $900, average $550 | Angi, 2026 |
| Garage door tune up | $100 to $240, average $190 | Angi, 2026 |
These are national figures, not our price list. We change the full set at once so every wheel rolls the same way. A partial swap leaves old and new wheels rolling unevenly.
The two bottom rollers sit in the brackets that hold the cables, and those brackets are under spring tension. That is the part we never leave to a homeowner.
During garage door roller replacement, we also check the hinges that hold each roller. A cracked or loose hinge lets a new roller wobble just like the old one. We tighten or swap those hinges in the same job, so the door runs straight.
Can one damaged panel be replaced, or do you need a new door?
Often one panel can be replaced, as long as a match still exists. A garage door is built from stacked sections, also called panels. A car bump or a storm usually dents one or two of them.
Garage door panel replacement is often the cheaper fix when only one section is hurt. Angi puts garage door panel replacement at $350 to $900, with a national average of $550. Labor alone runs $200 to $500 of that.
The catch is finding a matching panel. The new section must fit the same door model, size, thickness and style. Angi notes that custom or unusual panels can be hard to match. Then a full new door may make more sense.
A new panel on a faded door can also stand out. If several sections are damaged, the math changes fast. Our garage door replacement cost guide shows what a full door runs. We price both options so you can compare them side by side.

Why must a replacement panel keep the door’s wind approval?
Florida runs a product approval system for building products, and garage doors are part of it. You can look up a door’s approval in the Florida Building Commission database. The approval rates the door for wind as a tested system of parts.
DASMA, the door makers’ trade group, warns that parts which are not identical may weaken a wind rated door. A part can look the same and still be thinner or weaker. DASMA lists details like longer rollers and stronger roller bearings as features that can be critical.
So a replacement panel should come from the same maker and model, with the same wind rating. If no approved match exists, the door may need to be replaced to keep its rating. In that case, our garage door installation page explains the next steps.
A new door needs a building permit and an inspection. We’ll tell you exactly what your city requires before work starts. Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, per the National Hurricane Center. A damaged section is best fixed well before then.

What does a full garage door tune up cover?
A tune up is a full check of the door and opener, not just a squirt of oil. Angi lists inspection, adjustment, lubrication, safety checks and minor repairs as the usual parts. The DASMA safety tips also suggest a yearly visit from a trained technician. A garage door tune up can catch small problems before they become a broken spring or cable.
On our visits, we start with a balance test. We lift the door by hand and let go halfway. The CPSC says a balanced door stays put in that spot. Next we tighten hinge and track bolts, check the cables and rollers, and oil the moving metal parts.
Last, we test the safety reverse and the photo eyes. The CPSC also advises checking the door and opener every 30 days.
You can do those monthly checks yourself. Our garage door maintenance checklist shows what to look for. Our guide on how to lubricate a garage door covers which parts need oil and which do not.
