Off-track repair: the short answer
Is your door crooked, or has a roller popped out? Stop running the opener and keep everyone clear. The cables may be holding the whole door. We find out why it jumped. It could be a car bump, a frayed cable or worn rollers. We fix the parts and rebalance the door. Then we safety test it before we leave.

What does it mean when a garage door is off track?
It means one or more rollers have left the steel track. Nothing is guiding the door anymore. It can hang crooked, jam or drop. Treat it as a stop everything problem, not a nuisance.
A roller is the small wheel on a stem at each panel joint. It rides inside the track. The track is the curved steel rail that steers the door from upright to overhead. Lift cables are steel wires that run from the bottom corners of the door up to drums at the top. They carry the door’s weight as the springs lift it. Garaga, a door manufacturer, explains what happens when a couple of rollers come out. The door is left hanging, at risk, from its lift cables. That is why garage door off track repair is about the whole system. It is not just pushing a wheel back into the rail.
The signs are usually easy to spot. One side of the door sits lower than the other. A bottom corner leaves a gap at the floor. A roller sits outside the rail, or a cable hangs loose or has come off its drum.

What should you do right now?
Stop using the door. Keep people, pets and cars out from under it. Leave the cables and brackets alone.

- Do not press the remote or wall button again. The opener will keep pulling and can bend panels or tear the track off the wall.
- If the door is fully closed, unplug the opener so nobody runs it by accident.
- If the door is stuck partway open, do not pull the red emergency release. With a slack or broken cable, releasing the opener can let the door fall.
- Take photos of both sides, including the bottom corners and the drums at the top. Then call us so we bring the right parts.
Here is the mistake we see most. Someone taps the rollers back in with a hammer and runs the door again. It may even close. But whatever made it jump is still there, whether a stretched cable, a bent track or a loose bracket. Now the door runs out of balance. DASMA, the door manufacturers’ association, warns that the bottom brackets are tied to the springs. They are under extreme force. DASMA also says only a trained technician should replace cables. If it happens at night, our emergency garage door repair line answers 24/7.

Why do garage doors come off track in Florida?
The usual causes are a car bump or a cable that slipped or snapped. Worn rollers and track hardware loosened by rust cause it too. Near the coast, those last two show up sooner.
Car bumps top the list. Garaga notes the car may be moving only 3 to 5 mph and still do real damage. The bottom panel takes the hit and shoves rollers out of the rail. Cables come next. When one frays, slips off its drum or breaks, that side drops. The door twists and rollers pop out. Worn rollers are the quiet cause. A seized bearing makes the wheel drag and climb out of the track.
Florida adds its own stress. Salt air off the Gulf and steady humidity rust steel parts. That includes rollers, cables and the bolts that hold the track brackets to the wall. So a door in Sarasota or Pinellas can wear faster than the same door inland. Hurricane season runs June to November. FLASH reports that more than 90% of house damage in severe wind events begins when garage doors fail. They separate from their mounting, collapse, or cave in. A door that already rattles loose in its tracks is a weak point. So we often pair garage door off track repair with a look at hurricane garage doors and bracing.
What does garage door track repair involve?
Garage door track repair means fixing the steel rails so the rollers run true again. It covers three problems. A track can be bent, often after a car bump. The brackets that hold it to the wall can work loose. Or the tracks can drift out of line with the door.
A track is never fixed on its own. DASMA says the track and sections work together as a system. It also says to use the track designed for your door. Clopay notes that a door on a misaligned track may screech or wobble, and that aligning it takes precise measurements and special tools.
This is not a DIY job. The bottom brackets connect to the springs, and DASMA warns they are under extreme tension. The CPSC says a door that binds or sticks should be serviced by a professional.
Here is how we handle it. We check the whole door, not just the bent rail. We agree on the price with you before any work starts. Once the track is right, we balance the door and test the safety reverse.
Garage door cable repair: frayed, slipped or snapped
A frayed cable should be replaced before it breaks. When one cable fails, we replace both. A new cable on one side and a tired one on the other lifts the door unevenly.
A lift cable is a braided steel wire. It winds onto a drum above the door as the door opens. Check the bottom corners. Rust, broken strands or a kink near the bottom bracket all mean the cable is close to failing. We rewind or replace the cables and seat the drums. Then we rebalance the springs, because cable force and spring force work as one system. If a spring broke too, our garage door spring repair page explains that part of the job.

Nylon or steel rollers: which should you choose?
For most homes near the Gulf, we recommend nylon rollers with sealed ball bearings. They run quieter, and a nylon wheel cannot rust.
Steel rollers are tough and suit heavy doors. But bare steel rusts in salty, humid air. Rusty bearings get loud and start to drag. Cheap nylon rollers with no bearings sit at the other extreme. They wear flat fast. A common myth is that a grinding, squealing door needs a new opener. Very often it is just worn rollers, and garage door roller replacement costs far less. Angi prices nylon rollers at about $10 to $20 each. Steel runs about $15 to $30.
When we replace rollers, we change the full set so every wheel moves the same way. The bottom rollers sit in the brackets that hold the cables. Those are the ones we never leave to a homeowner.
How much does garage door off track repair cost?
It depends on what made the door jump and what got bent. So we check first and quote before any work starts. National cost guides show what each part of the job usually runs:
| Repair | National cost range | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Lift cable repair | $100 to $350 | Angi |
| Lift cable repair | $100 to $400 | HomeAdvisor |
| Roller replacement, parts and labor | $150 to $250, average $200 | Angi |
| Track repair, bracket to full track | $5 to $400 | HomeAdvisor |
| Off track reset and realignment | Quoted on site | Majestic Garage Door |
A reset with no damaged parts lands at the low end of garage door off track repair. Two new cables, a bent track section and a full roller set push it higher. Every job ends with us balancing the door and testing the safety reverse. Did the opener strain while the door was jammed? Then we check it. We point you to garage door opener repair only if it needs it.
