What counts as a garage door emergency, and what can wait until morning?

Is your home open to the street? Call now. Call now if your car is trapped and you need it. Call now if the door is crooked, hanging or off its track. Does the door still close and lock? Does nobody need the car before breakfast? Then it can usually wait for a daytime visit.

Those are the calls where emergency garage door repair at night is worth it. A door stuck open leaves the house unsecured. In Florida it also lets in rain and mosquitoes. A door that came off its rollers is dangerous to touch. So is a door with a dangling cable. It can drop without warning.

A noisy door or a dead remote is annoying, not urgent. We would rather tell you that on the phone. Why send a truck at midnight for something a fresh battery fixes?

What should you do in the next 10 minutes?

Keep people, pets and cars out from under the door. Stop pressing the opener button. Only pull the emergency release if the door is fully closed. Then call us and tell us what you see.

An emergency release is the cord with a red handle hanging from the opener rail. Pulling it disconnects the door from the opener, so you can move the door by hand. Chamberlain is the company behind LiftMaster openers. Its manual operation instructions say to use the release only when the door is fully closed, if possible. They also warn that a door with weak or broken springs may fall rapidly and without warning.

Here is why. A torsion spring is the tightly wound steel coil above the door. It carries almost all of the door’s weight. Say that spring snaps while the door is open or half open. Then the opener is often the only thing holding the door up. Pull the cord in that moment, and several hundred pounds can come straight down. It lands on whatever is under it.

A common mistake is thinking the red cord is the first thing to try in any emergency. It is the right move on a closed door with a dead opener. Did you hear a bang on an open door? Do you see a gap in the spring, or a slack cable? Then leave the cord alone and wait for us.

How do you secure a garage door that is stuck open?

Lock the inside door between the garage and the house. Move valuables out of sight. Leave the garage door exactly where it is, unless it is fully stable and fully closed. A locked house door makes an open garage a much smaller problem for one night.

Do not try to force a stuck open door down by hand. Do not wedge it with a ladder or prop it with lumber. If the spring is broken, the door is much heavier than you expect. If a cable has come off its drum, one side can fall faster than the other. That can twist the panels. Let us lower it with the spring force under control.

If the door came off its track, see our page on off track garage door repair. It explains what we do once we arrive. Our spring repair service covers the most common cause of a door that will not move.

What do we ask when you call?

We ask a few quick questions. That way the technician brings the right parts. You also get a real price before anyone drives out.

First, where is the door right now: open, closed or partway? Did you hear a loud bang? Can you see a gap in the spring above the door? Is a cable hanging loose? Is the door crooked in its tracks? We also ask the door width and your city. A photo by text helps a lot. Take one only if you can do it safely from the side of the door, never from underneath it.

What does 24 hour garage door repair cost?

The parts and labor for the repair cost about the same at 2 a.m. as at 2 p.m. What changes is the service call. We tell you the full price on the phone before we come out. Then you can decide to book tonight or wait for morning.

For a sense of the repair itself, look at Angi’s 2026 cost guide. It puts garage door spring replacement at an average of $250, typically $150 to $350 for one door. Its cable repair guide lists an average of $225, with a range of $100 to $350. Those are national figures, not our price list. Any emergency garage door repair quote from us comes before the work starts. We balance and safety test every door before we leave.

Emergency garage door repair after a storm

After a hurricane or a hard afternoon squall, a door can end up dented, bowed or off track. That is a security problem and a wind problem at the same time. Will the door not close or seal? Then call us before the next band of weather.

The Federal Alliance for Safe Homes calls the garage door a home’s “largest and weakest opening”. It also says that in severe wind events, more than 90% of house damage begins when garage doors fail. They separate from their mounting, collapse, or cave in. That is why we treat a buckled door as more than cosmetic between June and November. Salt air near the Gulf rusts springs and cables faster. A storm often finishes off hardware that was already weak.

After a storm we focus first on getting the door closed and secure. If panels are bent, the long term answer is often a new door. Look for one with Florida Building Code product approval. You can look it up in the Florida Product Approval database. Most counties also require a local building permit. Our hurricane garage doors page covers that in detail.
