Garage door installation: the short answer

Replace the door if the panels are rusted, rotted or dented, or if it has no wind label. For most Florida homes, pick an insulated steel door. Make sure it has Florida Product Approval for your wind zone. Expect the work to take about one day. A permit and inspection are usually required, and we'll tell you what your city needs first.

Should you repair your garage door or replace it?

Replace the door when the panels are failing or the door can’t meet today’s wind code. Repair it when the problem is a spring, cable, roller or opener. Most calls we get are fixable. We will tell you so before we ever talk about a new door.

A garage door replacement makes sense in a few cases. Steel panels may be rusting through at the bottom near the Gulf. Wood may be rotting or coming apart in layers. A hurricane or a car may have creased several sections. Or an older door may have no wind label at all. A broken spring alone is not a reason to buy a door. That is a spring repair, and it usually takes about an hour.

A common mistake is replacing the door to fix noise or slow travel. Those are usually worn rollers or a tired opener. Or the door is out of balance. That means the springs no longer hold the door’s weight, so the motor strains. Fix that first. Then decide on a new door later with a clear head.

What does a Florida garage door have to meet?

Every new door installed here must meet the Florida Building Code wind load for your address. It must also carry a Florida Product Approval or local approval number. That number ties the exact door to a tested design. It covers the door, its reinforcing struts and the way it is anchored.

Florida Product Approval is the state’s list of building products tested to resist wind and impact. You can look up any door in the Florida Building Commission product approval database. This matters more than most homeowners think. FLASH calls the garage door a home’s “largest and weakest opening.” It also reports that “more than 90% of house damage in severe wind events begins when garage doors separate from their mounting, collapse, or cave in” (FLASH).

Most counties and cities in our area require a building permit for a garage door installation. An inspection follows. We’ll tell you exactly what your city requires before work starts. Then we install the door to its approval drawing. We leave the wind label on the door so an inspector, insurer or future buyer can read it. Are you near the coast, or do you want impact glass? Which material works best in Tampa Bay heat and salt air?

For most homes here, an insulated steel door is the best value. It is strong and affordable. It handles wind loads well when it is properly reinforced.

Aluminum and glass doors look modern and do not rust. But the glass needs an impact rating in many zones, and they let heat in. Real wood is beautiful, but it takes a lot of upkeep in our humidity. Wood look composite gives you the grain without the rot. It costs more than plain steel. Angi’s 2026 cost guide lists these national ranges for the door itself:

Material Typical cost range (Angi 2026) Florida notes
Steel $650 to $3,200 Best all round choice; ask for a galvanized, painted finish near salt water
Aluminum $600 to $2,900 Will not rust; dents more easily; glass panels need impact rating in many zones
Wood $900 to $4,500 Needs regular sealing in humidity and afternoon rain
Faux wood or composite $650 to $4,800 Wood look without rot or swelling
Vinyl $800 to $2,500 Resists dents and moisture; fewer style choices

Is an insulated door worth it in Florida?

Yes, for most homes. Here, insulation is less about winter. It is more about keeping a west facing garage from turning into an oven by 4 p.m.

R-value measures how well a material resists heat moving through it. The higher the number, the better it insulates. An uninsulated single layer steel door is just a thin sheet of metal. In July it radiates heat into the garage. It also heats any room above or beside it. A door with a foam core feels more solid. It runs quieter and resists small dents. Does your garage hold a freezer, a workshop or a laundry area? Then we almost always recommend an insulated door.

How much does garage door installation cost?

Angi puts the national average for a garage door replacement at $1,231. Most homeowners pay between $754 and $1,707 (Angi). Labor runs $200 to $500 when priced separately. A permit typically costs $40 to $120.

In Florida, garage door installation usually lands above that national average. That is true for a wind rated double door with reinforcement struts and an insulated core. The door is heavier and built to a higher standard. We measure and check your wind zone. Then we give you the price before any work starts. That price includes removing and hauling away the old door. It also covers new tracks and springs sized to the new door’s weight, plus the permit.

Does a new garage door add value to your home?

It does, and by more than almost any other project. Look at the 2025 Cost vs. Value Report. Garage door replacement had a national job cost of $4,672 and a resale value of $12,507. That recoups 268% of its cost (JLC Cost vs. Value 2025).

That is a national figure for a specific mid range project. It is not a promise for your house. Still, the garage door is often a third of the front of a Florida ranch home. Buyers notice a current wind label as much as fresh paint.

What happens on installation day?

Most new garage door installation jobs are finished in one working day. Here is how the day usually goes.

  1. We confirm the door, wind rating and permit with you. Then we safely let off the force in the old springs.
  2. We remove the old door, tracks and hardware and haul them away.
  3. We check the framing and jambs. Then we anchor the new tracks to the pattern in the product approval.
  4. We stack the sections and install the struts, springs and cables. Then we balance the door so it stays put halfway open.
  5. We connect or replace the opener and set the force and travel limits. Then we test the photo eye safety reverse.
  6. We walk you through manual release, lubrication and the wind label. Keep the product approval papers handy for the inspection.

Is your opener old, too weak for a heavier insulated door, or missing safety sensors? Then we will say so and quote a new one. If it is sound, we keep it. Our opener repair team handles both. We install throughout our service areas, from Pasco down to Charlotte County.
