LiftMaster reset: the short answer
A LiftMaster garage door opener reset can mean erasing remotes, resetting travel limits or clearing the myQ Wi-Fi. Hold the Learn button about 6 seconds to erase remotes and keypads. Use the adjustment buttons to reset where the door stops. Always test the safety reverse afterward. Unplugging the opener does not reset these settings.
A LiftMaster garage door opener reset can mean three different jobs. You can erase every remote and keypad, reset the travel limits, or reset the Wi-Fi. Each one uses a different button. The steps below come from LiftMaster and Chamberlain’s own support pages.
Models vary, so keep your owner’s manual close. The model number is on a label on the motor unit. If a step does not match what you see, follow the manual for your model.
What does a reset actually change on a LiftMaster?
A LiftMaster garage door opener reset clears one part of the memory, not all of it. A long press on the Learn button erases remotes and keypads. The adjustment buttons reset where the door stops. A myQ factory reset removes the Wi-Fi settings.
Unplugging the opener does not do any of that. Chamberlain notes that travel limits and force settings will not reset, even after a long time unplugged. So pick the reset that fits your problem.
Lost a remote or moved into a new home? Erase the remotes. Door stops short or slams the floor? Reset the travel. Changed your router? Reset the Wi-Fi.

Where is the Learn button, and what does its color mean?
The Learn button sits on the motor unit, above the antenna wire that hangs down. On some models it hides under the light cover. Its color tells you how old the opener is and which remotes work with it. Chamberlain lists the main colors in its Learn button chart.
| Learn button | Radio type | Years made |
|---|---|---|
| Green | Billion Code, 390 MHz | 1993 to 1997 |
| Red or orange | Security+, 390 MHz | 1997 to 2004 |
| Purple or brown | Security+, 315 MHz | 2005 to 2014 |
| Yellow, round | Security+ 2.0 | 2011 to 2022 |
| White, round | Security+ 3.0, Bluetooth | 2025 to present |
Take a photo of the button before you start. The color changes a few of the steps below. It also helps when you buy a new remote.
How do you erase every remote and keypad?
Erasing wipes every remote and keypad the opener knows. It is a smart step after you lose a remote or buy a home. Chamberlain’s erase guide lists these steps:
- Find the Learn button on the motor unit.
- Press and hold it until the small LED next to it turns off. That takes about 6 seconds.
- Let go. All the old codes are now gone.
- Program each remote and keypad you want to keep.
Yellow buttons take one more step to clear linked myQ accessories. Right after the LED goes out, hold the button again for about 6 seconds. When the LED turns off a second time, those accessories are removed too.
Car buttons that were paired as remotes stop working too. Plan to program them again with the rest.

How do you reprogram a LiftMaster remote after a reset?
You pair each remote with the Learn button again. Press and release the Learn button so its LED turns on. Then press and hold the remote button you want to use. The opener lights flash or you hear two clicks when it works.
Some LiftMaster remotes have their own program button on the back. On those, the number of presses depends on the Learn button color, per Chamberlain’s remote guide. Yellow takes one press, purple two, red or orange three, and green four.
Keypads follow a similar pattern with a PIN. Our keypad troubleshooting guide walks through it step by step. Do not hold the Learn button down while you pair. A long hold erases everything again.

How do you program a Chamberlain garage door opener?
You program a Chamberlain opener the same way as a LiftMaster, with the Learn button on the motor unit. Both brands come from Chamberlain Group. Chamberlain and LiftMaster publish the same Learn button colors. That is how to program Chamberlain garage door opener remotes and keypads with the steps you already know.
For a remote, use the short Learn press from the section above. Chamberlain says you then have 30 seconds to hold the remote button. The lights flash or the opener clicks twice when it works.
A keypad pairs with a PIN instead. These are the last steps for Chamberlain’s 940EV keypad:
- Press and release Learn. Its LED lights up.
- Within 30 seconds, type your 4 digit PIN.
- Press Enter until the lights flash or you hear two clicks.
- Enter the PIN and press Enter to test it.
Some keypads need a setup step first, so check the manual for your model.
How do you reset the travel limits so the door stops in the right place?
Travel limits tell the opener where to stop at the top and bottom. Reset them when the door stops short, leaves a gap or pushes hard into the floor. On Security+ 2.0 and myQ models, use the adjustment button and the up and down arrows. These are Chamberlain’s travel steps:
- Press and hold the adjustment button until the up arrow flashes or you hear a beep.
- Hold the up or down arrow until the door reaches the open spot you want.
- Press and release the adjustment button. The lights flash twice and the down arrow flashes.
- Hold the arrow until the door reaches the closed spot you want.
- Press and release the adjustment button. The lights flash twice and the up arrow flashes.
- Press and release the up arrow. The door opens to the new open spot.
- Press and release the down arrow. The door closes, and the settings are saved.
Some models use two colored buttons instead. Black moves the door up. Orange or purple moves it down. Older openers use screws on the side of the motor. Chamberlain says one full turn moves the limit about 2 inches.

Any change to the travel or force can affect how the door reverses. Chamberlain says the safety reverse must be tested after every adjustment. The door must reverse when it touches a 1.5 inch board, or a 2×4 laid flat, on the floor.
The test is simple. Lay the board in the middle of the door’s path and close the door. It should touch the board, stop and go back up. If it does not, run the travel steps again or stop using the opener.
The CPSC advises checking the door and opener every 30 days, not just after a reset. If the motor feels hot from many test runs, let it rest. Chamberlain suggests waiting 15 minutes before more changes.

How do you reset the Wi-Fi on a myQ opener?
A myQ factory reset clears the Wi-Fi and removes the opener from your app account. Use it when you change routers, sell the house or cannot reconnect. Chamberlain’s reset guide splits the steps by button color.
On yellow or white Learn buttons, hold the button until its LED turns off. Do it three times in a row, with no pause. Three beeps confirm the reset. On other colors, a single hold until the LED goes out does the job.
After the reset, remotes and keypads stop working until you pair them again. Then add the opener back in the myQ app. If nothing responds, unplug the opener and any battery backup for 30 seconds, then try again.

What if the opener still will not work after a reset?
Check the lights first. If they flash twice when you press a remote, lock mode is on. Chamberlain says to press the lock button on the wall control to turn it off.
If the lights flash 10 times, the safety sensors are the problem. One may be blocked, dirty or knocked out of line. Our guide on a garage door that won’t close covers the sensor checks.
A motor that hums, clicks or stops halfway needs more than a reset. That points to a worn gear, a failed board or a door problem. Our opener repair page explains what we look for.
Most of the time, a LiftMaster garage door opener reset fixes lost remotes, wrong stop points and dropped Wi-Fi. If yours does not, call Majestic Garage Door at (813) 774-1127. We answer 24/7, check the whole door and agree on the price before any work starts.
Questions about resetting a LiftMaster
No. Chamberlain says travel limits and force settings will not reset, even if the opener stays unplugged for a long time. A power cut alone is not a reset. To clear remotes and keypads, hold the Learn button. To fix where the door stops, use the adjustment buttons or the limit screws.
Lock mode is on. Chamberlain says two flashes of the opener lights mean the lock button on the wall control is active. While it is on, your remotes will not move the door. Press the lock button on the wall control to turn it off, then try the remote again.
About 2 inches, per Chamberlain's guide for openers with manual adjustment screws. The up and down screws turn in opposite directions to add travel, so check the label on the motor. Make small changes and test after each one. If the motor gets hot from many runs, wait 15 minutes.
Yes. Chamberlain says a factory reset clears the Wi-Fi settings and removes the device from your myQ account. Remotes and keypads also stop working until you pair them again. After the reset, add the opener back in the app, then program each remote, keypad and car button.
A round white Learn button marks the newest generation. Chamberlain's chart lists it as Security+ 3.0 with Bluetooth, made from 2025 onward. Its myQ factory reset takes three long holds in a row, like the yellow button. Check your manual, since some steps differ from older models.
Yes, in most cases. Both brands come from Chamberlain Group and use the same Learn button colors. A short press of Learn, then the remote button within 30 seconds, pairs a remote on either brand. Check the Learn button color first, since it decides which remotes and keypads will work with your opener.
