Black Garage Doors in Florida: Heat, Fading and Better Options

Black garage doors look sharp, but Florida sun brings heat, bowing and fading. How to get the look safely, and how white doors compare.

Black garage doors in Florida: the short answer

Black garage doors absorb much more heat, and DASMA says darker doors facing the sun are more likely to bow. Clopay warns that painting a door black without checking the maker specs can void the warranty, and some of its doors do not permit very dark colors. Factory dark finishes use heat reflective paint. White doors handle heat better but show dirt more.

Black garage doors are growing in popularity, but in Florida they come with a real trade-off: heat. Dark colors absorb more sunlight, and a hot door can bow, fade faster and lose its warranty if it was not built for that color. Clopay reports that white is still the most popular garage door color, but dark colors like charcoal, dark brown and black are rising.

This guide covers what the sun does to a dark door, how to get the look safely and how white doors compare.

Do black garage doors get hotter?

Yes. Clopay puts it simply: black surfaces absorb much more solar radiation than lighter colors. A door facing west or south in Tampa Bay or Southwest Florida can sit in full sun for hours.

That heat makes the outer skin of the door expand. DASMA, the trade group for door makers, explains this as thermal bowing. The door bends outward because the sunny side expands more than the shaded inside. DASMA says the darker the color, the more this happens when the door faces the sun.

DASMA adds that a south facing door in direct sunlight is more likely to bow, and that aluminum and plastics expand more than steel. It also notes that thermal bowing is a normal trait of doors, not a product defect. Struts on the back of the door help resist it.

Can you paint a white garage door black?

Check with the door maker first. Clopay warns that painting a door black without checking the maker’s specifications could void the warranty. Its painting instructions for some doors say black and very dark colors are not permitted. They define very dark as a Light Reflective Value of 12 or less.

Factory black doors are a different product. Clopay says its factory black doors go through a special thermal reflective paint process. Those coatings are designed to reflect more heat than ordinary dark paint. If you want a black door, a factory finish built for dark colors is the safer route.

Paint also adds weight. A DASMA sheet on springs notes that paint can push a door past the weight its springs were built for. Our guide on how to paint a garage door covers paint choice, prep and the parts to keep paint off.

Do black garage doors fade in Florida?

They can. Clopay notes that UV exposure can cause faster fading and uneven coloring on dark doors. In its sun damage guide, it explains that UV rays fade colors and break down materials over time.

Fading is often more noticeable on a dark door, because the change from black to gray stands out. Regular washing, a finish rated for outdoor UV and shade from an overhang all help. A door that faces north gets much less sun than one that faces west.

Are white garage doors better for Florida?

White doors handle heat better. Following DASMA’s point that darker doors bow more, a white door is the lower risk choice for a sunny wall. White is also the default color on many stock doors, which keeps choices and replacement panels easier to find.

The main downside is dirt. Clopay’s white garage doors guide notes that white doors can show dust and grime more easily. It recommends cleaning with water, a mild soap and a soft sponge.

What are good alternatives to a black garage door?

If you like the look but worry about heat, there are middle grounds:

  • A factory dark finish made for dark colors, rather than painted black.
  • Charcoal or dark bronze instead of true black. Clopay lists charcoal and dark brown among the rising colors.
  • Wood look finishes, which give warmth without full black.
  • Black trim and hardware on a lighter door, for contrast with less heat.
  • A shaded or north facing door, where heat matters less.

Material matters too. Steel expands less than aluminum or plastic, per DASMA. Our guide to the best garage door material for Florida compares the options for sun, salt and storms.

Does color affect a hurricane rated door?

We found no source saying that color changes a door’s wind rating. But how you change the color can matter. Paint adds weight, and DASMA warns that parts that are not identical can weaken a wind rated door. On a rated door, follow the maker’s instructions for any refinish.

If you are choosing a new door anyway, pick the rating first and the color second. Our guide to garage doors with windows covers the other big style choice, and how Florida rules apply to it.
