Garage door panel replacement: the short answer
You can often replace one damaged garage door panel instead of the whole door, when damage affects one or two sections and the door is under about 15 years old (This Old House). HomeGuide puts the cost at $300 to $900 per panel installed. Matching the model and color is the main hurdle. On a wind rated door, the new section must match what the door was tested with.
You can often replace one damaged garage door panel instead of the whole door. This Old House says a panel swap makes financial sense when damage affects one or two sections and the door is less than 15 years old. HomeGuide puts the cost at $300 to $900 per panel installed.
The catch is matching. The new section has to fit the door’s make, model, size and color. On a wind rated Florida door, it also has to keep the door’s rating. This guide explains when a single panel makes sense, what it costs and what can get in the way.
When can you replace a single garage door panel?
A single panel replacement works best when three things are true:
- The damage is limited. One or two sections are dented, cracked or rusted, and the rest of the door is sound.
- The door is fairly new. This Old House uses 15 years as the cutoff. Older doors are harder to match and may be near the end of their life anyway.
- Matching sections are available. The maker still offers the model, or a section that fits it.
A full new door makes more sense in other cases. HomeGuide says replacing the whole door may be better if several panels are damaged, the door is old or matching panels is difficult. This Old House adds a simple test: repairs that cost more than half the price of a new door spell trouble.

How much does garage door panel replacement cost?
Most single panel replacements cost a few hundred dollars. The table below shows national ranges from three sources. They are not Florida quotes.
| Item | National range | Source |
|---|---|---|
| One panel, installed | $300 to $900 | HomeGuide |
| Panel material only | $150 to $400 | HomeGuide |
| Labor | $150 to $500 | HomeGuide |
| Basic steel panel | $500 to $900 | This Old House |
| Panel part, all types | $150 to $1,500, plus $250 to $500 labor | Forbes Home (2024) |
| Glass panel | $400 to $1,000 or more | HomeGuide |
Material changes the price. This Old House notes that insulated steel panels cost 10% to 20% more than basic steel. Aluminum sections fall between steel and wood, and fiberglass costs more than steel. Custom wood and discontinued styles cost the most.

Why is it hard to match a new garage door panel?
Three things make matching tricky. First, models change. HomeGuide notes that matching new panels to older doors can be difficult, especially if the manufacturer or color is discontinued.
Second, colors fade. Clopay warns that the finish on a new section may not perfectly match the faded sections around it. The Florida sun speeds up fading, so a brand new panel can stand out on an older door.
Third, sections may come in sets. This Old House notes that you might need to buy two sections even if you only need one. Custom wood panels and discontinued styles can also mean special orders and longer waits.
You can help by finding the door’s label. This Old House says it is usually on the back of a section or on the door frame, and it lists the model number. A photo of that label, plus the door’s width and height, speeds up the search for a match.

Can you replace one panel on a hurricane rated door?
Yes, but the new section has to match what the door was tested with. A wind rated door is certified as a complete assembly. A DASMA sheet on component substitution warns that parts that are not identical may weaken the door. It adds that the certifying agency may invalidate the door’s certification if a part is substituted against the rules.
DASMA also says the original door maker should be contacted with any questions about substituting a part. In practice, that means the new section should be the same model and rating the maker specifies for that door. A section from a different door, even one that looks the same, can leave you with a door that no longer meets its label.
This matters most on the coast, where design wind speeds are highest. Our hurricane rated garage doors page explains how to read the wind label on your door.
Can a dented garage door panel be repaired instead?
Small dents often can. This Old House says small dents in steel sections often pop out with heat from a hair dryer. HomeGuide puts a minor dent repair at $100 to $300. Forbes Home reports a similar $125 to $300.
Bigger damage needs a new section. This Old House says that once a panel cracks, warps or develops holes, a new panel is the better option. HomeGuide adds that severe denting may require full panel replacement.
A bent panel can also affect how the door runs. If the dent reaches the hinges or the edge of the section, the rollers may bind in the track. That is why a panel visit should include a look at the hinges and rollers too.
Why is the bottom panel a job for a technician?
The bottom section holds the bottom brackets, and the lift cables attach to them. DASMA warns that because the bottom brackets are connected to the springs, they are under extreme tension. It says they should be adjusted or loosened only by a trained door systems technician.
Door makers put a warning label on the bottom bracket for the same reason. Replacing the bottom panel means safely taking that tension off first, then restoring it afterward. Our garage door parts diagram shows where the bottom brackets and cables sit.
The upper sections carry less risk, but they still hold hinges and rollers that keep the door in its tracks. A door that is not put back together correctly can bind, come off track or run out of balance.

What happens during a panel replacement?
The new section goes in where the old one came out. The hinges and rollers move over to the new section, or get replaced if they are worn. On a bottom panel, the spring tension is taken off first and the cables and brackets are reconnected afterward.
The job is not finished until the door runs right. We replace single garage door panels, and after every job we balance the door and safety test it. We also check the whole door, so you know if anything else needs attention before it fails.
If matching sections are not available, or the door is too worn to be worth repairing, a new door may be the better buy. A new door is covered on our installation page.

Questions about replacing a panel
Yes, in many cases. It works best when one or two sections are damaged, the door is fairly new and the maker still offers a matching section. If several panels are damaged or no match is available, a new door is usually the better choice.
HomeGuide puts it at $300 to $900 per panel installed, including $150 to $400 for the panel and $150 to $500 for labor. This Old House lists basic steel panels at $500 to $900. Insulated, wood, glass and discontinued panels cost more.
It can, if the maker still offers your model. Colors fade in the Florida sun, so a new section may look slightly brighter at first. Finding the label with the model number, usually on the back of a section or on the frame, makes matching much easier.
Usually a panel, when only one or two are damaged. This Old House warns that repairs costing more than half the price of a new door spell trouble. If several sections are damaged or the door is old, compare a full replacement before you decide.
Not the bottom panel. DASMA warns that the bottom brackets are under extreme spring tension and should be loosened only by a trained technician. Upper panels carry less risk, but the door still has to be reassembled, balanced and tested so it runs safely in its tracks.
