Opener reset: the short answer
To reset most garage door openers, hold the Learn or Program button on the motor until its light goes out. That clears every remote and keypad. Then pair the ones you want to keep. The button, the hold time and the lights differ by brand. Unplugging the opener is not a reset.
Knowing how to reset garage door opener codes can save you a service call. Most resets take less than a minute. You hold one button on the motor, then pair your remotes again. The exact button and the number of seconds depend on the brand.
This guide covers the main brand families, using steps from each maker’s own support pages. Keep your owner’s manual close. The model number is on a label on the motor unit. If a step here does not match what you see, follow the manual.
What does resetting a garage door opener actually do?
A reset usually means clearing the opener’s memory of remotes and keypads. The opener forgets every code it knew. After that, only the devices you pair again will work. It is the right move after you lose a remote or move into a new home.
A reset does not change where the door stops or how hard it pushes. Those are the travel and force settings. Chamberlain notes that unplugging the opener will not reset them either. So pulling the plug is not a reset, even if the opener sits unplugged for a long time.
Take a few minutes to get ready before you start. Gather every remote and keypad you want to keep. Write down the brand and the model number from the motor label. Many people who look up how to reset garage door opener memory forget the car buttons. Count those in too, since they stop working after a reset.
The wall button inside the garage should keep working. Genie says its wall console runs the door normally after the memory is cleared. That gives you a way in while you pair everything again.

How do you clear the codes on a LiftMaster or Chamberlain opener?
Hold the Learn button on the motor until its small light goes out. That takes about 6 seconds, per Chamberlain’s erase guide. All the old codes are then gone. The button is usually near the antenna wire, and sometimes under the light cover.
- Find the Learn button on the motor unit.
- Press and hold it until the LED next to it turns off.
- Let go. The opener has now forgotten every remote and keypad.
- Pair each remote and keypad you want to keep.
The button color tells you the opener’s age and radio type. Our LiftMaster reset guide has the full color chart. It also covers travel limits and the myQ Wi-Fi reset, so we will not repeat them here.
Many Craftsman openers work the same way. HomeLink lists Sears Craftsman with Chamberlain and LiftMaster openers that share a yellow antenna wire. If your Craftsman has a Learn button on the motor, check its manual for the hold time.
How do you reset a Genie or Overhead Door opener?
It depends on the age of the opener. Genie and Overhead Door use the same two styles of controls. Newer models have a Program button with blue and purple lights. Models made from 1995 to 2011 have a Learn Code button instead.
On a newer model, follow these steps from Overhead Door’s remote sheet. Genie gives the same steps for its own openers.
- Press and hold the Program button until the round light turns blue, then let go.
- Press and hold the up (+) and down (-) buttons together.
- Keep holding until both lights flash blue and go off. Genie describes them going solid blue.
- Test a remote. It should no longer move the door.
On a 1995 to 2011 model, hold the Learn Code button until its light stops blinking. Both makers say this clears every remote and keypad. Genie adds that car buttons, like HomeLink, are cleared too.

How do you reset a Skylink opener?
On a Skylink ATOMS opener, hold the SET button for 15 seconds. Let go when the small display flashes the letter E. Then press SET once more to confirm, per the Skylink owner’s manual. The E disappears, and all remotes and keypads are erased.
Other Skylink series use different buttons and times. Check the manual for your model before you start. Skylink posts its manuals on its own website.
How do you reset a garage door keypad code?
Most keypads let you change the code if you know the old one. On a Chamberlain or LiftMaster keypad, enter the current PIN. Then hold the # button until the opener light blinks twice. Enter a new 4 digit PIN and press Enter. Chamberlain’s PIN guide says the light blinks once when the change is saved.
Forgot the old code? Press the Learn button on the motor, then enter a new PIN within 30 seconds. Hold Enter until the opener light blinks. Genie keypads take a PIN of 3 to 8 digits. Genie’s keypad page explains its factory reset too.
If the keypad still will not respond, the battery or the pairing may be the problem. Our keypad troubleshooting guide covers those checks in order.
How do you reset a garage door remote that stopped working?
Start with the battery, then pair the remote again. A weak battery is the simplest cause. Many remotes use a small coin cell. Overhead Door’s remote, for example, takes a CR2032. Match the plus side to the mark inside the case.
If a new battery does not help, pair the remote again. On most openers you press and release the Learn button once. Do not hold it, or you may erase every code. Then press the remote button within about 30 seconds. The opener lights flash or the motor clicks when it works.
Overhead Door says to stand at least 5 feet from the opener while you pair. Being too close can get in the way of the signal. If the remote only works up close, the antenna or the opener’s radio may need a look.

When does an opener need more than a reset?
A reset fixes memory problems, not worn parts. If the motor hums but the door does not move, a reset will not help. The same goes for a door that jerks, stops halfway or feels heavy. Those point to the opener’s gears, its circuit board or the door itself.
Test the safety reverse after any reset or change. The CPSC says to lay a 2×4 flat under the door and close it. The door must reverse when it touches the board. If it does not, stop using the opener until it is fixed.
A broken spring can look like an opener fault. The motor runs, but the door barely lifts. Do not keep pressing the button. Our spring repair page explains the signs. A dead circuit board or stripped gear calls for garage door opener repair.

An opener with no safety sensors is too old to keep. The CPSC urges owners to replace openers that do not reverse. Our opener installation page explains how a new unit is fitted.

Questions about resetting an opener
Usually not. Genie says its wall console keeps working normally after the memory is cleared. Its wireless wall console and Aladdin Connect are not erased either. That gives you a way to run the door while you pair your remotes again. On other brands, check the manual if your wall control is wireless.
Not on a Genie keypad. Genie says programming is not lost during a battery change, so the same PIN should work again. If the keypad still does nothing, it may have lost its link to the opener. Pair it again with the Learn or Program button on the motor, then test the door.
It stops them from working, because the opener forgets their codes. Genie says a memory clear removes HomeLink and Car2U car buttons along with the remotes. The buttons in the car still hold the old signal, so you train them again. HomeLink suggests erasing them when you sell the car.
HomeAdvisor puts opener repair at $124 to $370 nationally, with an average near $236. A worn gear or a failed circuit board is a common reason. A broken spring is a door repair, not an opener repair. If you call us, we agree on the price with you before any work starts.
About 30 seconds on most openers. Chamberlain gives 30 seconds once the Learn light turns on. Overhead Door also allows about 30 seconds. Car buttons run on a shorter clock: HomeLink gives you 20 seconds after you press Learn. If the window closes, press Learn once more and start again.
